Inheriting Substance

3 min read

The Primary Text

“That I may cause those that love me to inherit substance; and I will fill their treasures.”— (KJV)Read Proverbs 8 in full →

The Lexicon

יֵשׁ (yesh) — Noun

From the Hebrew יֵשׁ (yesh), a particle of existence — "there is" — used substantively for substance or real being. Semantic force: The term carries an ontological rather than merely economic sense. Where other words for wealth name quantity, yesh names actuality. Theological depth: Scripture routinely contrasts what exists with what only appears to. Wisdom's inheritance is described not as more wealth but as wealth of a different order — the kind that survives contact with reality.

The Better MerchandiseOld Testament

“Happy is the man that findeth wisdom, and the man that getteth understanding.”

(KJV)

The same book values wisdom above silver and fine gold, using the language of trade to rank it.

The Riches of the InheritanceNew Testament

“The eyes of your understanding being enlightened; that ye may know what is the hope of his calling, and what the riches of the glory of his inheritance in the saints,”

(KJV)

Paul prays that believers would know the riches of the glory of His inheritance in the saints.

The Exposition

Wisdom is speaking in the first person throughout this chapter, and here she names what she pays: yesh — substance, that which actually is. The Hebrew word is built on the bare notion of existence. Wisdom's wage is not a category of luxury goods but reality itself, as against things that merely appear to be there. That framing is the whole argument. The chapter is not claiming that wisdom is more valuable than wealth on the same scale; it is claiming they are on different scales, because one of them is substantial and the other is not. Everything this world offers as security has a quality of thinness to it that becomes obvious at exactly the wrong moment. What you inherit by loving wisdom does not, because it consists of what genuinely exists. Wisdom has been speaking for twenty verses in the language of commerce — better than rubies, better than choice silver, my fruit is better than fine gold. She is arguing on the market's own terms, and winning on them. Then this verse quietly changes what is being traded. Yesh is not a word for treasure at all. It is the bare word for there is — existence, the fact of being. Hebrew uses it to say a thing is present rather than absent. So the wage wisdom offers, at the end of a long commercial argument, is not a superior grade of the same commodity. It is substance as against appearance: what is actually there, in a world full of things that are not. And the second half of the verse is a promise about capacity as much as contents. I will fill their treasures — the storehouse itself is filled, not merely supplied. Wealth of the ordinary kind has a way of enlarging the container faster than it fills it, so that a man ends with more and feels emptier. This one fills.

The Altar

Name one thing you have been treating as security that would not survive a serious crisis, and hold it more loosely starting today.

Daily Reading & Meditation

Passage:

Focus: Watch how the chapter values wisdom in commercial terms, then quietly changes the currency.

Ask yourself: What would you still have if your income stopped tomorrow? Answer slowly. The list is usually longer than fear suggests.

Jehovah-Jireh, the LORD who provides, You cause those that love You to inherit substance and fill their treasures. Loosen my grip by Your Holy Spirit on what only appears to be security. I pray in the name of the Lord Jesus, in whom I am truly rich. Amen.
