עָרַג (arag) — Verb, qal imperfect
From the Hebrew עָרַג (arag): to long for; used of an animal crying out from thirst. Semantic force: The word occurs only twice in the Old Testament, both in this psalm. It carries the sound of the longing as well as the fact of it — a deer calling because water cannot be found. Theological depth: The psalm makes spiritual desire a physical necessity rather than a refinement. A thirsty animal is not being devout; it is dying, and knows what it needs.
