πηγή (pēgē) — Noun, feminine
From the Greek πηγή (pēgē), meaning a spring, well, or fountain — the point at which water rises from below. Semantic force: The word denotes a self-replenishing source rather than a stored quantity. A pēgē is distinguished from a cistern, which holds only what has been carried to it, and from a river, which carries water past rather than producing it. Theological depth: Scripture repeatedly contrasts the cistern with the spring. What Christ gives is not a supply that must be topped up by repeated visits but a source relocated inside the believer, which is why the promise attached to it is that he shall never thirst.
