חָלַל (chalal) — Verb
From the Hebrew חָלַל (chalal), meaning to profane, pollute, or treat as common. Semantic force: The verb belongs to the sanctuary — it describes the desecration of what has been set apart as holy. Applied to covenant, it frames breach as sacrilege rather than mere breach of contract. Theological depth: God's covenant faithfulness is grounded in His holiness rather than in the recipient's performance. Breaking it would require Him to profane something He Himself has consecrated.
