ἀποκυέω (apokyeō) — Verb
From the Greek ἀποκυέω (apokyeō), from apo (from) and kyeō (to be pregnant): to give birth, to bring forth. Semantic force: The verb is maternal and biological rather than legal, and James has just applied it to sin bringing forth death. The parallel between the two births is deliberate. Theological depth: The new birth is attributed to God's will and executed by the word of truth. Neither the initiative nor the instrument belongs to the one born, which is why James can call the result firstfruits — a claim staked on a larger harvest.
