καταλαμβάνω (katalambanō) — Verb
From the Greek καταλαμβάνω (katalambanō), from kata (down) and lambanō (to seize): to lay hold of, grasp, or overtake. Semantic force: The verb carries both an intellectual sense (to grasp mentally, comprehend) and a hostile one (to seize, overpower). Greek permits both, and John gives no signal narrowing it. Theological depth: The ambiguity is theologically productive. Darkness in John neither understands the light nor defeats it, and the history of the gospel in the world illustrates both failures.
