The Lexicon
רוּם(rum) — Verb
To be high, exalted, elevated, supreme. Indicates absolute sovereign height over all created realities.
“These things said Esaias, when he saw his glory, and spake of him.”
(KJV)
John identifies the One Isaiah saw on the throne: these things said Esaias, when he saw his glory.
The Throne Set in HeavenNew Testament
“And immediately I was in the spirit: and, behold, a throne was set in heaven, and one sat on the throne.”
(KJV)
John is given the same sight — a throne set in heaven, and one sat on it.
The God of Israel SeenOld Testament
“And they saw the God of Israel: and there was under his feet as it were a paved work of a sapphire stone, and as it were the body of heaven in his clearness.”
(KJV)
The elders saw and then ate and drank — the vision did not consume them, which anticipates access rather than distance.
The Exposition
King Uzziah had reigned prosperously for fifty-two years, providing national stability and military security. When he died, panic and grief swept Judah. But in that exact year of national crisis, Isaiah received a vision that re-oriented his soul: he saw the true King, Yahweh, rum (sitting high and lifted up) upon an unshakeable heavenly throne. Earthly leaders die and nations crumble, but the sovereign King of Kings never vacates His throne.
The dating is doing more work than it looks. Uzziah had reigned fifty-two years — longer than most people in Judah had been alive — and the whole of Isaiah's life to that point had been lived under one throne. Then it emptied. In the year that king Uzziah died I saw also the Lord sitting upon a throne. One seat is vacated and Isaiah is shown another that is occupied, and the second sight seems to have required the first.
There is a further edge for anyone who knows how Uzziah's reign ended. He was a good king who grew strong and then presumed on the priesthood, went into the temple to burn incense, and came out a leper — put out of the house of God, living the rest of his life in isolation. The last man to enter that sanctuary claiming more than was his had been struck for it. Isaiah is standing in the same building.
Which is presumably why his reaction is not wonder but ruin. Woe is me, for I am undone. He does not say he saw something magnificent. He says he came apart.
The Altar
When earthly stability crumbles or leaders fail today, look up. Fix your eyes on the Lord sitting high and lifted up upon His eternal throne.
Daily Reading & Meditation
Passage:
Focus: Connect with this passage: John explicitly states that Isaiah saw Christ's glory and spoke of Him. Jesus is the Lord on the throne.
Ask yourself:Whose failure has shaken you recently — a leader, a friend, your own? Isaiah saw the Lord in the year that a king died, and the timing was not incidental.
O LORD of hosts, in the year that king Uzziah died, Isaiah saw You high and lifted up, and Your train filled the temple. When earthly stability fails, fix my eyes on that unshaken throne by Your Holy Spirit. In the name of the Lord Jesus, King of kings and Lord of lords. Amen.
