From the Hebrew יָצָא (yatsa), meaning to go out or come forth; in the causative stem, to bring out or lead forth. Verbal force: The hiphil stem makes God the agent. The righteousness does not emerge on its own or through the sufferer's advocacy; it is brought out by another. Theological depth: Scripture distinguishes between being righteous and being seen to be righteous, and assigns the second to God. This is the ground on which believers are repeatedly told not to defend themselves.

No Other GodsOld Testament

“Thou shalt have no other gods before me.”

(KJV)

The first command follows immediately, and its force depends entirely on the sentence before it.

I Beseech You ThereforeNew Testament

“I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service.”

(KJV)

Paul keeps the same order: eleven chapters of mercy, and only then a "therefore" about how to live.

The Exposition

Everyone can name some of the commandments. Almost nobody can quote the sentence that introduces them, and it changes what they are. I am the LORD thy God, which have brought thee out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage. Before a single requirement is stated, God identifies Himself by something He has already done for the people He is addressing. They are standing at Sinai as free men and women, and they are free because of an act performed on them while they were slaves. The verb is causative: He brought them out. The nation did not escape; it was extracted. Only then: Thou shalt have no other gods before me. Get that order wrong and the whole of Scripture is misread. Law before rescue produces religion — obedience offered to purchase a standing. Rescue before law produces gratitude, and the commandments become the shape of a life that belongs to Someone rather than the price of belonging. And notice the second person singular. Thy God, thee, thou — the address is to individuals, not merely to a nation gathered at a mountain. Each person hears it as spoken to them. Paul preserves the same structure in Romans: eleven chapters describing what God has done, and then, at the beginning of chapter twelve, I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God. The therefore is the whole argument. Nothing is required of the reader until a great deal has been given.

The Altar

Before you examine your obedience today, name out loud one thing God has already brought you out of.

Daily Reading & Meditation

Passage:

Focus: Read verse two aloud before each commandment and notice how it changes the tone of the one that follows.

Ask yourself: Do you obey God to secure your standing or because it is already secure? Listen to how you feel after a day you consider a failure — the answer is usually there.

My Father in heaven, I thank You that before You asked anything of Israel You reminded them what You had done for them. Thank You that You brought me out — I did not escape. Let Your Holy Spirit keep the order right in me, so that obedience is gratitude and never a payment. In the name of the Lord Jesus, who redeemed me. Amen.
