עוֹלָם (olam) — Noun, masculine
From the Hebrew עוֹלָם (olam), from alam (to conceal): the vanishing point; time out of sight in either direction; and so, eternity, the age, the world. Semantic force: The root sense is of what is hidden by distance rather than of infinity as a quantity. Olam is the horizon — real, and never arrived at. Theological depth: The Preacher says God has set olam in the heart of man. Whatever else that means, it locates the human restlessness with time inside a deliberate act of God rather than treating it as a defect.
