אָמַן (aman) — Verb, hiphil perfect
From the Hebrew אָמַן (aman): properly to build up or support; to be firm, reliable; and in this form, to rely upon, to trust. Semantic force: The root is structural before it is mental. It describes what holds — a nurse carrying a child, a pillar bearing a roof — so believing in Hebrew is nearer to leaning than to agreeing. Theological depth: The word amen comes from this root. When a congregation says it, they are not expressing enthusiasm but placing their weight on what has just been said.
