הֲדֹם (hadom) — Noun, masculine
From the Hebrew הֲדֹם (hadom): a footstool, always used in Scripture in the phrase footstool of the feet. Semantic force: In the ancient near east the image was literal and political. A conquering king placed his foot on the neck of the defeated, and reliefs survive showing exactly this; a footstool is not furniture in such a scene but a statement about who is subdued. Theological depth: The enemies are not annihilated in this psalm but positioned. They remain, and they remain beneath — which is the precise state of affairs between the ascension and the end.
