ἀγωνία (agōnia) — Noun, feminine
From the Greek ἀγωνία (agōnia), from agōn (a contest, the arena): anguish, the extremity of a struggle. Semantic force: The word belongs to the games. It describes the state of a competitor at the moment of maximum exertion — not passive suffering but conflict at its height, everything spent and the outcome still in the balance. Theological depth: Luke, a physician, uses a contest word for Gethsemane. What happened among the olive trees was not resignation but combat, and it was decided there before a hand was laid on Him.
