— "Thou in thy mercy hast led forth the people..."
Spiritual Rescue: — "Are made nigh by the blood of Christ."
Light and Darkness: — "Called you out of darkness into his marvellous light."
The Exposition
Salvation is not a self-improvement program; it is a divine rescue operation. God forcibly snatches believers out from under the tyrannical grip of spiritual darkness and relocates them into the sovereign realm of His beloved Son.
Paul uses two verbs and both are decisive. Delivered — rescued, as a man is pulled out of a house that is burning. And translated — a word used of an empire deporting a conquered population and resettling it somewhere else entirely. Rome did it; Assyria did it. Whole peoples were moved, and nobody consulted them about the timing.
That is deliberately jarring, and it is meant to be. It says the change of address was not a decision you made from a position of comfort, weighing options. Nobody negotiates their way out of a kingdom of darkness. You were under a jurisdiction, and the jurisdiction was changed over your head by someone with the authority to change it.
Notice too that both verbs are past tense. Not God is delivering, not God will translate when you are ready. Hath delivered. Hath translated. Whatever this morning feels like, your citizenship is not currently being processed.
And notice where you were put. Not into a neutral space, not into a probationary holding area, but into the kingdom of his dear Son — literally, the Son of His love. You were moved into the sphere where the Father's affection for the Son rests, which is why the next verse can speak of redemption through his blood, even the forgiveness of sins as a present possession rather than a hope. Paul is praying this over people he had never met, in a city he had never visited. He assumes it is true of every believer, including the ones having a difficult week.
The Altar
Recognize your citizenship is no longer in this present evil age.
Daily Reading & Meditation
Passage:
Focus: Give thanks for the complete transfer of spiritual jurisdiction.
Ask yourself:Do you still think of yourself mainly as someone trying to get out of the dark, or as someone who has been carried out of it? Ask what evidence you are using to decide, and whether it is your feelings or God's statement.
Father of lights, thank You for rescuing me out of the domain of darkness and seating me in the kingdom of Your dear Son. Let Your Holy Spirit teach me to walk today as a child of light. In the name of the Lord Jesus, the Light of the World. Amen.
