“That ye may be blameless and harmless, the sons of God, without rebuke, in the midst of a crooked and perverse nation, among whom ye shine as lights in the world;”
(KJV)
Paul places the shining in the middle of a crooked and perverse generation, not apart from it.
The Light of LifeNew Testament
“Then spake Jesus again unto them, saying, I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life.”
(KJV)
Christ claims the title first; the disciple's light is derived rather than original.
The Risen LightOld Testament
“Arise, shine; for thy light is come, and the glory of the LORD is risen upon thee.”
(KJV)
Arise, shine, for thy light is come — the command to shine follows the arrival of a light not our own.
Do not hide your faith at work, in your family, or in culture today. Let your good works and clear testimony shine brightly before others.
Passage:
Focus: Notice the goal in verse 16: not that men would praise you, but that they would "glorify your Father which is in heaven."
Ask yourself: Is there someone who knows you well and does not know you are a Christian? You do not need to announce it. Ask instead what they would have to see to guess.
Father of lights, let my light so shine before men that they may see my good works and glorify You. Keep me by Your Holy Spirit from hiding the lamp or from lighting it for my own name. I pray in the name of the Lord Jesus, the Light of the World. Amen.
